Interlude – The Official Newsletter of The All-American Boys Chorus | SUMMER 2019
I have had a great first two months serving as the new CEO of the All-American Boys Chorus! I have enjoyed getting to know this organization, its staff, Board, parents, alumni, partners, and supporters and am grateful for the kind welcome I have received so far. While my background has been leading the fundraising and communications departments for both for-profit companies and Symphony orchestras, I also come to the chorus with a degree in Education and as a mother of two adolescent boys.
In a short time it is immediately clear to me that our choristers are not only given a strong education in music through the extraordinary work of our long-time Artistic Director, Wesley Martin, but are also provided with a strong sense of purpose, a feeling that they belong to a group without judgement, a motivation to learn, and a joy in the hard work it takes to produce this art form. Our current staff, while small in size, is an enviable team and impressive individuals who I am confident will help us grow and thrive.
This past Spring we made great progress in expanding our footprint in our community by building a new partnership with the Tustin Unified School District. Thanks, in part to a sponsorship from the Enderle Center, Artistic Director Wesley Martin and our head music instructor Sue Martin spent countless hours visiting and instructing choral classrooms at every elementary school in the district plus several middle and high schools. They were instrumental in helping the district form a new honors 5th grade chorus, which culminated in an all-school performance alongside the All-American Boys Chorus on April 15.
Looking forward, on June 22, 2019, the Chorus will perform the entire score of the film Titanic with New West Symphony in the West Coast premiere of Titanic Live! at the William Rolland Stadium of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. On July 3 we perform our own Summer Concert at Calvary Church in Santa Ana. We invite you to share in this fun, family event.
June and July also mark important months for the chorus as we run our intensive week-long summer camp and embark on an East Coast tour with performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Washington Naval Academy, and a stop at Disney World in Orlando.

The team has been hard at work creating new digital content of the Chorus with our enhanced recording studio. On St. Patrick’s Day, we launched a beautiful rendition of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” featuring Colin, Kyle, Matthew, and Sebastian in beautiful solos.

Youssef Hanna (’07) – Youssef was the first of three brothers to join the AABC, all of whom went on to become Staff Members. Youssef was a Bass Part Leader during his time in the Chorus. For the last year, Youssef has been serving as a Non-Safety Paramedic in Escondido, CA and was recently promoted to a full Firefighter/Paramedic.
Hunter Dennis (’11) – Hunter joined the Chorus as a Second Tenor following his older brother. In 2018, Hunter graduated from CSU Long Beach with a degree in Communications. Hunter was recently hired by Universal Studios in Japan.
Brendan Reeves (’16) – Brendan was a First Tenor Part Leader during his time in the Chorus. Brendan recently placed as a semi-finalist for the OC Register’s prestigious Artist of the Year award in Vocal Music!

Did You Know?
The All-American Boys Chorus staff of 11 is made up of 8 former choristers? Celebrating his 22nd year with the chorus, Aaron Cassaro (‘95) was promoted to COO this year and leads student and parent relations and general operations of the chorus. Avery Dennis (‘09) is now running digital media and production including a total revamp of the chorus website plus instructional and marketing videos.
The All-American Boys Chorus is truly fortunate to have such a committed and thoughtful Board of Directors. Thanks to the continued dedication and leadership of the Board, the Chorus is positioned to launch a new phase in its development. The Board is responsible for defining and upholding the organization’s mission, vision, and values, and for providing overall leadership and strategic direction to the organization. In addition to setting policies and maintaining the non-profits’ overall direction, the board establishes priorities, crafts strategies and ensures that plans and programs are implemented. Board members are also involved in fundraising efforts, spreading the word about our good work and using their connections to gain access to potential donors, actively participating in fundraising campaigns and making their own personal donations.

Seeking New Candidates
The All-American Boys Chorus is currently seeking to increase its Board membership. Interested candidates should submit a bio to Genevieve Macias, CEO at email@example.com. Top candidates will be interviewed by the CEO and Board Development Committee member and nominations will be made to the Board of Directors for election prior to the next full meeting. Candidates will be notified of the result immediately following the process.

2019 “NIGHT AT THE DERBY” FALL GALA
Join the AABC for a night full of music and fun at our 2019 “Night at the Derby” Fall Gala! The Gala will be held at the beautiful Hyatt Resort in Newport Beach, and will be honoring David Benoit with our Great American Award. Mr. Benoit is a world-famous jazz pianist, composer, and producer. He has produced numerous charted albums, and received numerous accolades, including three Grammy nominations, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Smooth Jazz Awards, and an Emmy Award for his Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Mr. Benoit is also the Music Director for the Asia American Symphony Orchestra and the Asia America Youth Orchestra, and has been a wonderful friend to the AABC for many years!
